Want to Learn About Red Dot Sights?

Posted by

Red dots sights are not scopes. People refer to these sights as red dots, optics, or red dot optics. A red dot sight is an optic designed to be used at close to moderate ranges. It is a very simple optic that uses a simple reticle to do a simple job. Red dot optics are 1x optics and do not feature a built-in magnification.

Most red dot sights are "reflex" sights, meaning that the objective lens works as a partial mirror onto which a led projects the red dot. The way red dot sights operate is by using a laser light beam to project an image onto a tinted piece of glass.

A sight radius with the front sight on the front end of the barrel can be increased by moving the rear sight from the barrel onto the receiver or tang. Sights for shotguns used for shooting small, moving targets like wing shooting or clay shooting work quite differently.

Benefits

The benefits of using a red dot sight are:

  • Significant improvement is speed, without decreasing accuracy
  • It puts you on target faster than iron sights
  • Faster than magnified optics

A shooter should understand the signs and how to use the sight to maximize these advantages to take advantage of that speed.

Front Sight

On a front sight, the shooter no longer needs to focus with one eye while the target appears out of focus. If the target is in plain sight, you can use an electronic sight to take aim?

Batteries

Without power, lighted reticles in a rifle scope appear black. Without power,  nothing is visible in a red dot sight. You need batteries for any red dot. The battery life is up to 10,000 hours or about five years on some Aimpoint models.

Nighttime

Many dot sights come with night vision and are explicitly created for night time use. You will also be able to use laser sight at night. Keep in mind that because the laser is so bright, it may scare off other animals.

Range

Scopes vs. Red Dot Sights for AR-15. For a sight that works well on shorter-range shooting (less than 300 yards), the red dot sight can be a great choice. Typically red dot sights weigh less than a scope and are much better for quick target acquisition.

Military

In 2000, the U.S. military introduced the AimpointCompM2, a red dot sight into field use, designated the "M68 Close Combat Optic".

MOA

The illuminated red or green dot of a red dot/reflex sight is measured in MOA—minutes of angle, a unit for angular measurement of a circle. 1 MOA is equal to 1.047 inches at 100 yards, which we round down to 1 inch. Meaning, the circle (red dot) will appear to be 1 inch in diameter on a target 100 yards out.
