Florida leads the Nation with Close to 2 Million Concealed Weapon Permits

Posted by

According to Tampa Bay Times, “Florida is leading the nation with the highest number of concealed weapon permits, and our state is nearing a new threshold of granting authority to 2 million civilians who can lawfully carry guns tucked in waistbands, under jackets or inside purses into restaurants, shopping malls and elsewhere. Texas has the second-highest number, at 1.36 million as of December, according to figures from that state's Department of Public Safety”.

As of March 31st, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services reports that Florida had a total of 1,971,997 currently valid concealed weapon permits. It is estimated that the permit number increases about 17,500 each month in Florida. Plus, another 12,745 correctional officers, military, judges or law enforcement officials hold permits in Florida.

Apply for a concealed weapon license in Florida

If you are wondering how to get a concealed weapon license in Florida, here is a link to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website. There are four ways to apply:

  • Online
  • In person
  • By mail
  • Renew

If you go to the service location, you will need to bring:

  • A Picture ID (driver’s license)
  • A copy of a training document or certificate that confirms that you are proficient with a firearm.
  • Your payment – Fee Schedule

The turnaround time for processing the license is an hour or less. Then, your application goes to Tallahassee for processing and takes approximately 50 to 55 days.

Florida concealed weapon

“Unlike most other states, it is illegal in most circumstances to openly carry a gun in public in Florida. The state requires prospective permit-holders to be at least 21, undergo training, demonstrate they can safely fire a gun on a range, submit fingerprints to the state and have no felony criminal record. The permit, which resembles a driver's license, initially costs about $100 and remains valid for seven years. It takes about two months to receive a permit after applying.

Felons or applicants with convictions for domestic violence or a record of drug or alcohol abuse are ineligible. Since July, Florida denied 6,430 people who sought permits.

Florida's permit covers weapons, not just guns, including knives or stun guns. Permit-holders are still not allowed to carry guns in schools, post offices, court buildings, airport terminals, police stations or on university campuses,” reports Tampa Bay Times.

Approved Training Courses

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services “to qualify for a concealed weapon license, Florida law requires you to submit proof of competency with a firearm. A copy of a Certificate of Completion or similar document from any of the following courses or classes is acceptable:

  • Any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a similar agency in another state;
  • Any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
  • Any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, using instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services;
  • Any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
  • Any firearms training or safety course or class conducted by a state-certified instructor or by an instructor certified by the National Rifle Association”.
